My thoughts on it all

Never-never Land

May 14, 2004 — I tell you, never ever ever ever...EVER go with cheap hosting, unless they specify how often they backup and you have verification from them personally that they backup that frequently.

The sadness that brings on my recent outrage is 7 months of ASP/HTML development files down the tubes all because of some lousy MS Server Error. I was just getting some users too. I know you're all going to say you get what you pay for, but you'd think they'd run a backup of people who are paying them 50 bucks a year more often than once ever 7+ months. Of course I do my own backups, but the database was just largely added to after I backed up and then WHOOMPF...gone! Moral of the story is: never buy hosting from anyone unless you have proof of their backup period. Seriously, how hard is it to copy 5 megs of data to a hard drive every once in a while? I'll get off my soap-box and hear what you have to say.

That totally sucks.

You should comb through their promo, your contract, whatever, to see what they promised you as far as data integrity and security. You may just have some kind of legal case for compensation.

That's what I'm hoping for. We'll see.

I'm curious -- what was the server error? I've never heard of a server error that causes data loss.

derekz says:

My bad -- system error caused the crash. They gave me contrary facts stating that the system structure failed to restore, but nevertheless, they have FULL backup of all the data. Not true as I have witnessed.

DataBind() says:

Terrible luck. Stay away from lightening storms for a while. :)

derekz says:

I'm actually switching hosts and getting a refund. They're actually willing to refund which suprised the hell out of me. I'm thinknig it might be because of the data loss but who knows?

DataBind() says:

Must be. This is the first time I've ever heard of a software error causing data loss of that magnitude. Usually the disk just goes bad or something.

Like I said, terrible luck.
